WHO needs TV soaps when we have the long-running farce that masquerades as a federal government.

The latest episode sees the Nationals plugging the necessity of having a shotgun equivalent of the Winchester 73 that made its name in the old west of the US.
As any hunter knows, you kill an animal when deer hunting and that’s the last you’ll see of deer for miles around.
Likewise with roo, rabbits and so on.
These creatures aren’t daft.
They’ve survived successfully for millennia by getting the hell out of it at the first sign of danger. The same with any wild animal or bird.
After the first shot the chances of success wane considerably, with oodles of time to reload if you have a single or twin barrel gun, so there’s no point in carrying a miniature arsenal.
Richard Hill, Newstead.
DONALD TRUMP
LET’S get this straight.
A large part of Donald Trump's appeal is that he is a successful New York businessman.
Success meaning win at all costs and if you look like losing then blame everyone else.
The GFC and unfettered capitalism in a nutshell.
Tony Newport, Hillwood.
MALCOLM TURNBULL
BEFORE we all indulge in a criticise Malcolm Turnbull-fest we should perhaps acknowledge that we, the electors, hobbled him at the recent federal election by believing the mendacious Labor Medicare scare campaign and subversive telephone calls.
We grudgingly returned his administration to power with a slender majority and now expect him to work miracles against a Labor Party that has lost its way.
The sooner we realise that subversive forces are now steering the Federal Labor Party we can again unite as a nation to meet the challenges ahead of us.
The last thing Australia needs is a neo-totalitarian play acting Labor government burdening us with increasing debt.
It has been said that democracy delivers a government that the people deserve and that should give us food for thought.
Len Langan, Longford.
Health Lottery
AN IDEA well worth considering is a state-operated lottery, with the profits going to fund the health system.
In the 1940s in NSW, there was such a lottery. This was before Medicare. There could be a problem, though. Tax on casino profit is levied, and may be a better proposition for governments. What do you think?
B.Sundstrup, Newstead.
Nauru
SHOULD any independent organisation criticise the conditions under which refugees are detained on Nauru? The first government response is to blame Labor and then say that in any event the facilities are first-class and the refugees are well cared for.
If this is true, why does the Nauruan government steadfastly refuse to allow the foreign media access to the centre so that the claims by UNHCR and Amnesty International can be shown to be totally false?
The Coalition will, of course, wash their hands of involvement despite the fact that millions of dollars are paid to Nauru so that the true state of this centre is not known to the Australian public.
A. Carter, Mowbray.
Same-Sex Marriage
AT THE risk of boring readers with opinion on same-sex marriage, I often asked whether I am a believer. My answer if you don’t have to be a believer to be an acceptor. Isn’t that what equality is all about? Isn’t being an acceptor part of being Australian?
