Several seasons begin on October 1. Rainbow trout waters opening are Dee Lagoon, Junction Lake, Lakes Meston, Rowallan, Skinner and Youd, the Mersey River above Lake Rowallan, River Leven above Loongana Road and Weld Rivers North and South. Inland Fisheries reports Great Lake rainbow spawners average 1.3 kg and are in top nick.

Whitebait season also starts on October 1 and closes on November 11. Rivers open are the Great Forester, Tamar, Rubicon, Mersey, Forth, Inglis, Montagu, Duck, Pieman, Henty, Huon and Derwent. Licences are essential and cost $30.50.
There are sea-run trout in the Leven River and parties on the Gordon River scored sea runners up to four kilos.
Tooms Lake and Lake Leake most productive and with spring warmth increasing, Four Springs Lake, the Macquarie and South Esk Rivers and Brumbys Creek, should shortly have trout chopping down red spinner mayflies.
One lower South Esk angler reports big soldier fly duns are already drawing brownies up and is impressed by their good condition. This season the South Esk trout limit is five per day.
