She said the areas of Launceston, Tamar Valley and George Town were now working together.
“There has been a very obvious recognition that we’re a region, and what’s good for one player in the region is good for everybody else,” she said.
“The best chance for our region is to look at the economy as a whole, not just the Northern region but the state as a region as well.”
Cr Archer said the announcement of cruise ship L’Austral’s circumnavigation to Inspection Head would have flow on effects for tourism.
“Talk about a 30-minute city...it’s positioned right in the middle of the Tamar Valley region,” she said.
“From two hours on Inspection Head, it is absolutely nothing to travel from Inspection Head to Pipers River or into George Town to look at what we have here.”
However, unemployment continues to be a major hindrance.
George Town unemployment sat at 11.3 per cent in March of this year, according to the federal government’s Small Area Labour Markets report.
The town has a population of 6,819, 2014 data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed.
George Town general manager John Martin said the council’s investment in economic development was part of a strategy to revitalise the town.
“The only way to do it is to attract new businesses and industry and forge a new pathway, and get more private and public investment,” he said.
In the last year, groups such as Northern Tasmania Development and the George Town Economic Steering Committee have been established to enable collaboration.
NTD was recently remodelled with an independent chair to better identify and secure funding for projects throughout the North.
The George Town Economic Steering Committee is part of a bigger push to bring more business to the Bell Bay Industrial Precinct, with 12 local businesses involved in appointing an economic development project officer.
