Dr Tim Laws, of Launceston’s Animal Medical Centre, said the animal was most likely shot from below with an air rifle.
It was presented to the clinic still alive, but Dr Laws said its chances of survival were too low.
“These are good birds,” he said.
“They’re not a pest bird. Someone has done this for the sheer thrill of it.”
Dr Laws said Bororong Wildlife carers presented the bird to his clinic.
After it had been euthanised, Bororong carers handed the body over to the Parks and Wildlife Service, Dr Laws said.
Earlier this week, the RSPCA said it would investigate after a duckling was found decapitated at Launceston’s Star Bar Hotel on Saturday.
