Rocherlea Action Group president Robert Clarke said he considered abandoning the project before receiving encouragement from community members.
“I'm hoping they didn't steal it just for the sake of it,” Mr Clarke said.
“You're not stealing from me personally, you're stealing from the whole Rocherlea community.”
The stolen star pickets have since been replaced thanks to donations from wellwishers, but Mr Clarke said the group was still short of the finances required to build a new fence.
“We started to put the tyres out getting ready to put the vegetables in, they were going in within the next couple of weeks but that's now been set back because we have to replace the fence.
“Overall the feedback has been good, people have been saying ‘sorry this has happened’, but we just need money now to replace everything.”
