A group of 39 students from grades 8 to 12 travelled to Adelaide for the competition. The band won the Intermediate Concert Bands, Advanced Concert Bands and Junior Big Bands categories and were overall section winners in Intermediate Concert Bands and Junior Big Bands in the national competition.
St Patrick’s College director of bands Fiona Mowat said the trip is about more than just competing.
Going to the comp is only a tiny part of it. We actually go to encourage music education
- Fiona Mowat
“Going to the competition is only a tiny part of it. We actually go to encourage music education and we make it our mission to go around to lots of primary schools,” she said.
“We rock up and we play for an hour and we have great fun and then we encourage them and we say, ‘Play music, get involved and you’ll have a great time’.”
The students perform for local primary schools, incorporating choreography, superhero costumes and popular tunes to foster a passion for music and musical education.
Ms Mowat said the performances were a huge success. “The primary school students go wild,” she said.
