Public access to the mine yard area has been prohibited as a precautionary measure following the ground movement under the large headframe structure. It will remain closed until the area has been assessed for its safety.
West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said the cause of the ground movement is not yet known.
“We don't yet know the cause but we are undertaking comprehensive assessments of the mine shaft, headframe and surrounding surface to determine the extent and cause of the movement,” she said.
“Once the cause is known we will develop an appropriate plan to secure the site.”
The headframe is the most visible part of the mine and has been a key draw card in the mine display.
The remainder of the Beaconsfield Heritage and Mine Centre remains open.
