Junction Arts Festival general manager Steve Henty said for every dollar the state government gives the festival they inject $5 back into Launceston’s economy.

“This year we have changed Junction slightly and we are doing this to set up for the next five years,” he said. “We are looking at increasing the amount of people that we can get to come to Tasmania specifically for this event, so we are really keen to not only get people from interstate but also get people from Tasmania moving around.” 

The unique program of events incorporates local businesses with Launceston’s incredible architecture and quirky venues to encourage further visitation in the state’s north. 

 “From Launceston there is so many places you can go and visit,” Mr Henty said. 

“We are really exposing these hidden gems of Launceston … just really highlighting what Launceston has got as a tourism destination and a place to stay.”

Tickets sales are up 30 per cent when compared to this time last year. 

“This is a new era for Junction, we are really making it very clear that Junction is for everybody,” Mr Henty said. 

Junction chair Liz Frankham said having Prince’s Square as the festival hub and having so many events free of charge has made it more accessible. 

“It is a really funky part of town and the fountain is a great centre piece,” she said. 

“I think it will be easier for people to recognise Junction going forward.”

Junction will receive $750,000 in government funding over the next three years. During the five days and fight nights, the state government predicts the festival will inject $1.4 million into the economy.

Bass Liberal MHA Sarah Courtney likes the participatory nature of Junction. 

“The other aspect of the festival that I think is particularly important is the fact that is uses some disused, unloved or underutilised spaces in this city,” she said.  

Festival organisers are hopeful once Launcestonians get out and experience, watch and enjoy what Junction has to offer they will spread the word to family and friends.
