The taxi driver was responding to a call at the corner of Conway and Caswell streets at Mowbray just after 11pm on Tuesday.
When he arrived, he was met by two men who lured him into a nearby gravel carpark.
There, they threatened him with a large knife and stole his mobile phone.
They also demanded money but did not get any.
They then ran away on foot.
The taxi driver was not physically hurt during the attack.
Police are following a number of inquiries but are calling for anyone with any information to contact Launceston Police on 6777 3945 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
