Members from the Tasmanian Bhutanese community gathered at the University of Tasmania, Newnham campus to participate in prayer, dancing and the sharing of traditional foods for Teej.
Women began fasting on Saturday night, Australian Bhutanese Society Northern Tasmania chairman Rup Koirala said.
“They begin Sunday with prayers, they pray for health and peace for their families and the community,” he said.
After their prayers the women performed a traditional dance followed by an array of festivities including singing, eating and drinking.
On Monday, women will resume their fasting for the Teej celebrations.
A final ceremony will be held at the Migrant Resource Centre hall in Mowbray on Tuesday.
Mr Koirala welcomed everyone in the Tasmanian community to attend the ceremony and participate in a day of festivities and food sharing from 9am to 3pm.
