Local Government Minister Peter Gutwein has chosen not to intervene at the Flinders Island council after the dismissal of general manager Raoul Harper in July.

Mr Gutwein said he had recently contacted the council after receiving a letter of explanation as to Mr Harper’s sacking.
“The advice that I have to hand is that they haven’t breached the local government act and therefore this is a contractual matter that needs to be worked through by the council,” he said.

Flinders Island residents reacted with outrage after a vote in a closed council meeting led to the dismissal.
Response to public questions from the July meeting were published in the August agenda, and the council rejected the suggestion it has erred in law.
“Council’s position is that it has at all times acted in accordance with its statutory powers, functions and obligations and it will continue to do so.”
