The three-day event is expected to attract up to 1500 spectators, 60 journalists and photographers, and feature 500 cyclists in the international competition in April. 

Dorset Mayor Greg Howard said he believed tourism before and during the event would flow on from St Helens right through to Bridport.

“Certainly Weldborough, Winnaleah, Branxholm, Derby, those places immediately close, they can’t cater for the number of people,” he said.

Crank It Cafe owner Michelle Rowe said she was looking to hire more staff to cater for the event and the busy Christmas period. 

Last year, a round of the Enduro World Series was held in Sobrarbe in Spain. 

According to the organisers of Enduro, the week of competition saw 8000 bed nights in accommodation sold and the event generated an estimated economic boost of one million Euro.  

Visitation in the area increased from 24,000 in the year the event was announced to 55,000 in the year it was held.

The Dorset Council anticipated a similar percentage of growth for Derby, and expected over 1500 people to visit the town on the day of competition, with local businesses benefiting as far as Bridport. 

Since the trails opened in February last year over 22,000 people have ridden Blue Derby.

Vertigo MTB managing director Buck Gibson said the announcement had put Derby on the world stage.

“Both interstate and internationally the audience of the Derby and Blue Derby Trails had immediately gained more recognition,” Mr Gibson said.

“It will become the single biggest driver of attracting international riders to Derby, I can’t think of any other event where you could actually generate more.” 

Cascade Cottage owner Virginia Valentino said she was almost fully booked out from September through to mid-January. 

Brother’s Town Cottage owner Kris Todman said 120 nights of accomodation at the facility had already been booked up until April.
