But 17-year-old Grace Kenyon finds the diverse crowd at Launceston Aquatic inspiring.
Miss Kenyon, of Relbia, is one of six young Northerners undertaking a writing residency around Launceston.
She submitted a poem, a short murder mystery and a piece based on beginnings to win the residency.
“Just writing in general I really want to do professionally, and I would love to go down the creative pathway but we will see what happens,” Miss Kenyon said.
“I feel like written words have an incredible power, more so than spoken word … I think water can be written beautifully about.”
The Tasmanian Writers’ Centre Twitch Young Writers Program facilitates the Young Writers in the City program.
The residents’ work will be published on the TWC website and the writers will receive $300.
The young writers will present extracts at the Junction Arts Festival Soapbox Event on Sunday, September 11, at 1pm at Prince's Square.
