Councillor Hannah Rubenach-Quinn said while East Coast communities wanted to encourage tourism, concerns had been raised about the lewd slogans and images painted on the rental vans.
“Not all the campervans have things that could be deemed this offensive, but there’s been a lot that have been reported to numerous authorities like the Anti-Discrimination Commission in Tasmania which are deemed as offensive and vilifying other people and discriminatory,” Cr Rubenach-Quinn said.
She said from the communities perspective, they wanted action as the vans could be seen by children or people in vulnerable situations who could feel marginalised.
“It’s more about just trying to get council to take a stand because we know that the slogans actually reflect attitudes and reinforce attitudes in the community, and the attitudes then guide behaviours,” she said.
Our council can take the bold step of being a leader in this to help to counteract some of the attitudes of misogyny and discrimination and vilification that is out there.

“Our council can take the bold step of being a leader in this to help to counteract some of the attitudes of misogyny and discrimination and vilification that is out there and I think making a statement on the Wicked Campervans is one step we can take to make the community a better place.”
She said Wicked Campervans had been asked to remove certain slogans but had not responded.
“There has been a groundswell of community action which has seen a lot of privately operated camping grounds in Australia and New Zealand take the action of banning Wicked Campervans from using their facilities,” she said.
Wicked Campervans was contacted for comment.
