Following 38 years in the military, Brett and Jeanette Dower sold their house in Canberra, toured Australia for a year, and then settled on beautiful Deloraine as their new home town in Tassie.
Having found the perfect one-hectare block of land near the Meander River, the couple started building in October last year and were moved in by February this year.
“There’s a lot to do when you’re establishing a new property, and I knew I wanted some kind of small tractor plus a digger so that I could do the driveway, fences, mowing and other major jobs myself,” Brett said.
“But after looking into it I decided it just wasn’t worth it - the outlay for multiple machines was too high.”
On a recommendation from friends, Brett went to Tasmania Farm Equipment and the local representative talked him through the options.
“We settled on a new Kubota - it became obvious that this was what we needed because it could do everything,” he said.
“Basically what we were dealing with was a sheep paddock - so one of our priorities was mowing and planting trees.
“I can’t tell you how many hours of manual labour this amazing piece of machinery has saved us!”
Calling the Kubota a “retirement present to myself” Brett also bought two augers, a carry-all and a trench ripper to add to the handy bucket attachment that came with the machine.
Brett has since dug more than 50 holes for planting silver birch, banksia and fruit trees as well as moved gravel around to eliminate puddles of water and countless other jobs.
Even the tradesmen working on his house were quick to utilise it whenever possible.

“We’ve had three lots of interstate visitors and every one has booked a session on the Kubota and had the fun of digging a hole and planting a tree. Like me they have a smile on their face every time they’re at the controls.”
