The second round of the Tasmanian rally championship series has attracted a strong field, including former Targa High Country winner Eddie Maguire, of Elliott.
Maguire has decided to set his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 to gravel rally specifications, and will be a strong contender for outright honours in the car’s debut gravel rally event.
Launceston’s Australian all-wheel-drive rally champion Marcus Walkem has also entered in a Lancer Evo 9 and his battle with Maguire should be a highlight of the event.
Walkem will be chasing his third consecutive championship.
The outright winner of the Hellyer Rally is also awarded the Victor Huddlestone Memorial Award, named in memory of the North West Car Club member and navigator who was killed in a crash while competing in the 1999 Rally Tasmania.
Saturday’s event starts and finishes at the Stanley Hotel, with cars departing from 11am.
The rally will comprise of 10 stages encompassing 120 kilometres of competitive driving.
