Miller, 22, is the only Tasmanian in the 22-strong national team of swimmers with Down Syndrome who are set to compete in Florence from July 15 to 22.
The Exeter swimmer, who already holds a swag of long-course world records, added to his tally of national short course records at the South Esk sprint meet at the Launceston Aquatic Centre.
Miller set a new Down Syndrome Australian short course record in the 50m freestyle with a time of 30.86 seconds. His previous record time was 31.09.
He won six gold, two silver and one bronze medals at an international swimming meet for Downs athletes in Mexico in 2014.
Miller was one of more than 210 swimmers at the seventh annual South Esk sprint meet.
South Esk president Jayne Shepherd said the event was a huge success, with swimmers vying to win a share of $1500 in prize money.
“With the inclusion this year of multi class and masters’ swimmers, together with visitors from Townsville and Victoria, it is now the largest swim meet on the Swimming Tasmania calendar outside the state age and open championships,” she said.
“The day was full of fun and activity, both in and out of the pool. With the DJ pumping out music, activities like ‘dance cam’ proved a hit with all ages.”
The highlight of the program was the 50m freestyle ‘dash for cash’ events.
In the senior male event, Kit DeJonge, 17, of South Esk, took the $250 first prize from Max O’Leary, 16, of Cradle Coast, and Jack Sladden, 15, of Riverside Aquatic.
Amelie McCarthy, 15, of Hobart Aquatic, won the senior female cash dash, from South Esk’s Morgen Hawkins, 19, and Abbey Badcock, 16.
Maximillian Giuliani, 12, of Hobart Aquatic, won the $125 junior male dash from William Gray, 12, of Launceston Aquatic, and Rufus Bresnehan, 12, of Hobart Aquatic. Stefanie McCarthy, 12, of Hobart Aquatic, won the junior female dash from Launceston Aquatic’s Ellie Muller and Amy Muldoon, both 12.
South Esk maintained its dominance in the Curran Cup 400m relay through Morgen Hawkins, Angus Robertson, Sophie Hinds, Bethany Howell, Xavier Nesbit, Taylor Raine, Harry Reid and Kit DeJong. The host club made a clean sweep of the top three positions and retained the cup for the third year in a row.
The medal tally saw South Esk top with 34 gold, 26 silver and 32 bronze, from Hobart Aquatic (25 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze), then Launceston Aquatic (eight gold, 13 silver, seven bronze) and Riverside (eight gold, eight silver, 12 bronze).
