However, with a few ring-ins and help from the Burnie seconds the home side were gallant in defeat to their Southern opponents at Royal Park – losing 33-11.
Vikings assistant coach Danny James said a number of their players were absent on a university hiatus.
“The team was a bit of a hotchpotch of players… the score was probably not what we were expecting and certainly not what the other side was expecting,” James said.
Launceston coach Nic Sotiriou said his side had the sun in their eyes for the first-half of the Bees’ twilight game against Devonport at Royal Park.
Devonport took full advantage and were spared the same hinderance after half time – winning 89-0.
“It was tough game,” Sotiriou said.
In other matches, Eastern Suburbs narrowly defeated Hobart Hutchins Lions 20-15, while Harlequins destroyed University 64-14.
