The Suns set the scene quickly with two set plays from the opening whistle – a long overhead to the Subbies circle, and a classic penalty corner conversion for Keelan Beattie that gave them the lead with just 45 seconds gone from the clock.
The Subbies threw all they had at the home team in an effort to get back into the game in a fast paced game that had the crowd enthralled and the umpires on their toes.
The second half was much of the same as the teams traded possession and attacks on goals.
A penalty corner infringement in the 41st minute gave the Suns a penalty stroke that coach Al McBain converted with ease to stretch the lead to 2-0.
A further penalty corner conversion for McBain after the clock ran out gave the Suns a comfortable win.
Smithton and Burnie Baptist struggled to a 0-0 draw in a game described by Saints coach Nigel Kingston as not pretty, but a good hard scrap none the less.
A missed stroke for Baptist’s Anthony Lockett and some top-class saves for keeper Callum Poke were the highlights of the game.
Kingston controlled the Saints defence in a best on ground performance.
The battle of Burnie looked set to go South Burnie’s way as they punished the City Marians defence for the opening 25 minutes of the first half, with keeper Josh Downey and fullback Rhys Burgess closing down the line to the net.
With ten minutes of the half left, the Bloods gained momentum and mounted an attack on the Hawks defence that saw them head to the break with the lead.
South Burnie came out hard in the second half, scoring in the first thirty seconds from the stick of Jordan Dart, but the ensuing arm wrestle couldn’t produce any further score.
The late game in Launceston between Tamar Churinga and Queechy was a vigourous affair with fast passages of play from both sides and plenty of attack on the goals.
Ryan Horne’s corner conversion in the 21st minute added pressure to the Tamar cause as they battled to add a second win to their season.
Justin Ockerby answered the call six minutes later, levelling with a field goal as the teams went to the half time break.
Both teams tried everything to break the deadlock in the second half, with Tamar keeper Daniel James more than equal to the Penguins onslaught.
At the other end of the ground, the team defence of Ryan and Cameron Horne controlled the flow for Queechy..
