Lyons Labor candidate Brian Mitchell said the centre was a vital piece of sporting infrastructure for the Northern Midlands community.
“The centre was built in 1984 and is in need of expansion and significant upgrades to cater for an increasing number of patrons,” Mr Mitchell said.
“The gym has a membership of more than 500 people and this number is expected to increase in the coming years as the local population increases,” he said.
A Bill Shorten Labor government would match a $482,500 grant by the Northern Midlands Council.
Mr Mitchell said the council completed a master plan for the centre last year.
The planned expansion includes upgrading the multi-purpose stadium and redevelopment of the existing gym room for aerobics and fitness.
“Longford has an older than average population and an upgraded fitness and sports centre will promote health and wellbeing for residents.”
Mr Shorten has been in Tasmania this week.
