Major Projects Minister Paul Fletcher is set to announce the funding in Launceston on Thursday.
So much depends on good, safe roads
- Bass MHR Andrew Nikolic
Almost $2 million of the funding will go towards a secondary access road at Bridport.
The total project will fetch $4 million, with the Dorset Council and state government contributing $1 million each.
It involves the design and construction of a 4.6 kilometre road.
Bass Liberal MHR Andrew Nikolic said due to Bridport being a seaside town it had a mix of residents, holiday makers, tourists and agricultural and sea fishing industries using its roads.
“Currently the town has only one road access,” Mr Nikolic said.
“A second access road has been identified as a necessary piece of local infrastructure for several decades on the basis of road safety, bushfire emergency evacuation and much-needed economic development.”
Westbury Road, which carries about 15,000 vehicles each day, will also benefit from $400,000 for an upgrade at the Bass Highway junction.
The intersection will provide the main access into the Prospect Vale Park clubrooms and sports fields.
Charles Street, Frankland Street and Howick Street in Launceston will receive $230,000 for a pedestrian safety zone.
The area sees 10,000 vehicles each day with peak flows of 1,000 cars, 30 bikes and 120 pedestrians.
“The project will significantly improve pedestrian safety and amenity in the vicinity of the Launceston General Hospital,” Mr Nikolic said.
Mr Nikolic said pedestrians would be able to cross Charles Street more conveniently.
“Patients, their visitors and staff at the hospital will have a meeting and waiting area on the street in an upgraded high quality environment,” he said.
“So much depends on good, safe roads – commuters, tourists and transport operators.”
