ROAD authorities say speeding drivers are still a major problem on state roads and police are out in force to prevent the crime, as National Road Safety Week continues.

The annual event – aimed at preventing the unneccessary loss of life behind the wheel each year – comes following six fatal car crashes in Tasmania over a one week period from April 22 – 29.
On Tuesday, Tasmania Police Northern Commander Brett Smith said officers concentrated their efforts on speeding drivers this week.
“Too often police see the results of going too fast. It is better to arrive a little late rather than not at all,” he said.
Road Safety Advisory Council chair Jim Cox said speeding is a factor in almost half the road fatalities in Tasmania each year, and it is a factor in more than a third of crashes on the island that result in serious injury.
“Ask yourself: what can I do to help make our roads safer?” Mr Cox said.
“One answer is to drive to the conditions which means going at a speed that’s safe for the weather and road conditions and that may be well below the speed limit. The faster a vehicle is going, the less time there is to react to the unexpected. Give yourself that time and slow down.”
National Road Safety Week runs from May 1 to May 8.
