RECENT rains have alleviated the effects of the prolonged dry season for some of the state’s farmers but left others out in the cold, receiving only small amounts of rain and evaporating winds.

The rain is expected to continue this week with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting several cold fronts to cross the state every few days for the rest of the week. BOM forecaster Rachel McInerney said the Northern region could expect between 20 and 30mm of rain overnight and into Tuesday but the West could receive significantly higher falls.
“Particularly in the West it could be more like 50-70mm and the Northern Tiers in the north-east highlands could see up to 50mm,” she said.
A severe weather warning was issued by BOM for damaging wind gusts overnight.
Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association chief executive Peter Skillern said the recent rains had assisted some farmers in the North and North-West of the state however those in the Midlands and the south had received little to no rain.
“Unfortunately the Midlands and southern Tasmania did not receive significant falls and continue to be obviously in the grip of an extended dry period,” Mr Skillern said.
“Some places certainly in the North-West and North of the state there were reasonable falls...some places in the North-West got near 60mm.”
Mr Skillern said the low rainfall for the south was compounded by dry winds that evaporated any rain the are received.
He said any rain in the state was welcome and hoped the new fronts to cross the state would extend across the whole of Tasmania.
