Dr Sousa stood alongside emergency service employees in Launceston on Sunday to launch National Road Safety Week for 2016.
The launch came at the same time as the state saw six fatalities on our roads in just two weeks.
“I would love a day when I did not have to tell a mother that her son had died in a car accident,” Dr Sousa said.
“If I could prevent half of these people from having to come to the emergency department and from having to experience that traumatic event in their lives, it would have huge impact.
“Driving to the conditions is just so, so important.”
This year, Tasmania Police will focus on a different issue on each day of Road Safety Week, the “fatal five” will include not wearing a seatbelt, speeding, and driving while affected by alcohol or drugs.
Northern Commander Brett Smith said he wanted to see people driving to the conditions and acting responsibly when they are behind the wheel.
