We have a serious need in Australia, and Tasmania in particular, for technology based degrees and associate degrees which are relevant to Industry.
UTAS has a good history in this area, but its ongoing success will be compromised in a very few years if the relocation does not occur.
UTAS wants to invest in Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths, but can't do so economically at Newnham.
They will introduce more of these studies at associate degree level, without cutting back on any current degree courses.
It is also planned to introduce an Institute of Applied Science and Design.
The world-class Australian Maritime College will flourish in its present form and location.
Let them advance into the future as they propose, so we in Tasmania, and the north in particular, can reap the benefit of technology-based qualifications which are tailor made for industry here.
In order to do that, though, the politicians and UTAS management who will be making funding decisions need to know that they have the support of the majority of the community.
As a person who is in an industry which would employ these graduates, I urge our community to give them that support.
D. Luck, Norwood.
HERITAGE AWARDS
WE ARE in the midst of this year’s City of Launceston’s Heritage awards.
Council could make its own contribution by requesting the owners of that little gem of a building at 97 George Street remove the dark brown paint from the facade brickwork.

MARRIAGE
UNFORTUNATELY Vera McMullen (Letters, April 14) strongly held belief does not equate to fact, inconvenient though it might be for you.
When Australia changes the Marriage Act it will be decided by the federal parliament.
God will not have a say in this decision.
