The not-for-profit organisation took over management and operations of Scottsdale aged care facility Aminya last year after concerns it was headed for closure.
May Shaw has now approached the Tasmanian Health Service with an offer to take control of the 29 residential aged care beds in the James Scott Wing of the North Eastern Memorial Hospital.
The organisation’s proposal includes applying to the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing for the aged care places, recruiting employees from the current base and leasing the premises to provide the service.
“The THS has also discussed with May Shaw the transfer of the kitchen and day care centre,” Tasmanian Health Service executive director of services Sonia Purse said.
“This is only to ensure that May Shaw is able to operate as effectively as possible and allows for a consolidation of aged care provision.
“The proposal intends to ensure the long term sustainability and viability of aged care services within the Dorset area as a response to recent experience which demonstrated concerns around operating two separate services in Scottsdale.”
Ms Purse said that while a number of matters needed to be agreed on, it was hoped a transition to May Shaw could take place by September.
Community consultation will be held on the proposal with regular meetings to occur at the North Eastern Memorial Hospital to ensure consultation with staff and their representative bodies.
May Shaw representatives will also meet with residents and their carers to discuss the process.
“This is all about bringing about positive change in order to give aged care services a bright, secure and sustainable future in Dorset,” Ms Purse said.
May Shaw Health Centre negotiated for months with Presbyterian Care for Aminya, which it took over in November 2015.
The Swansea-based organisation specialises in care for the elderly and people with disability.
Services include aged care, care programs and day care, brokerage services, community aged care packages and retirement units.
