Disabled schooling funds call

Independent Schools Tasmania said on Thursday that it was lobbying for an "urgent" injection of federal government funding to provide additional support for students with a disability, ahead of the federal election.

The organisation's chief executive, Tony Crehan, said if the group was unable to attract the funding it needed, it might mean some students with a disability would be unable to go to independent schools, which was something it did not want to happen.

Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby founder Kristen Desmond said it was not good enough for schools to say children with a disability might not be able to attend due to funding.

"We say we are an inclusive society, but then schools are saying, 'you can't come here because you cost too much money', rather than making the adjustments," Ms Desmond said.

"It's time they start looking at the positives."

Ms Desmond said students with a disability added value to schools, and parents should be able to send their child where they chose.

It is illegal for any school to refuse a child's enrolment based on disability or for the school to solicit extra fees to cover disability support costs.

Ms Desmond said it would join in IST's call to bring in the disability loading, that was supposed to be provided under Gonski, for all schools.

The reform lobby has also called on the state government to implement in full the six recommendations in the Improved Support for Students with Disability Ministerial Taskforce Report, so "that children with a disability would finally get the support and resources that they need for the education that they are entitled to".

Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff has previously said the government took immediate action to commit $1 million to implement several initiatives after receiving the report last year.

"We are continuing to work with the community as we consider the remaining recommendations," Mr Rockliff said.
