A PROPOSAL to move the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay science and technology precinct into the heart of Hobart will not affect the mooted $235 million Launceston campus move, the university says.

Infrastructure Australia listed a proposal to relocate the university’s science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) research and training facilities to Hobart’s CBD, as one of the top 100 national priority projects in its 15-year national infrastructure plan, released on Wednesday.
University vice-chancellor Peter Rathjen said it would not affect discussions in Launceston to move the Newnham campus to Inveresk.
‘‘The funding would come separately,’’ Professor Rathjen said.
‘‘We will not have the option to choose between them because the funding will be delivered specifically for the North or specifically for the South.
‘‘We simply are pushing ahead on all fronts.’’
Professor Rathjen said moving the Hobart STEM facility – with a 23,000sq metre site on the corner of Argyle and Melville streets the preferred site – would bring in more academics, students and researchers.
‘‘We want to put our campuses where everyone can see them and where public transport ends,’’ he said.
A business case for the Hobart proposal is yet to be drawn, but funding will need to come from the university, state and federal governments.
Professor Rathjen said the project would take two phases, each costing $200 million.
Infrastructure Australia has proposed the STEM facility move should occur in the next five years to stimulate economic growth and productivity in Tasmania.
Professor Rathjen said developing in Hobart and Launceston at the same time ‘‘is exactly what we would like to be doing’’.
When asked if there would be enough funding for both projects, Professor Rathjen said: ‘‘It has been my experience, that if your ideas are good enough funding follows.’’
He said it was premature to say whether the university’s ultimate goal was to move the whole Sandy Bay campus to the city centre.
An announcement on the Launceston campus move is expected in coming weeks.
