Luckily, there's an organisation that offers you the chance to get involved at the highest level and walk off the ground as a winner every week of the season.
That organisation is the Northern Tasmanian Football Umpires Association, and they're looking for more numbers to join their ranks for the upcoming football season.
NTFUA president Chris Bass said umpiring was a great way for young athletes to earn money and keep fit and retired footballers to stay in the game.
"We have a lot of young fellas coming through but we also have a few guys that have finished their footy career and decide to come down here and run around," he said.
"It's good having guys that have played the game getting back involved in the game as well."
Supplying umpires to leagues such as the TSL, NTFA and NTJFA, the association also offers the pathway for highly-skilled athletes to progress to the VFL and AFL.
NTFUA head of coaching Mick Goodyer said many skills acquired through umpiring could easily be transferred to the workplace.
"It's a good family environment and it also works well too for future pathways down the track whether it be in a job or whether it be in umpiring," he said.
"You're dealing with people so it gives you good people skills and things like that, so that always helps in any sort of job."
The NTFUA meets at Aurora Stadium at 5.30pm on Monday and Thursday nights.
