Basslink has released a media statement confirming there will be further delays in repairing a fault in the underwater electricity cable.

In the statement, Basslink said it was proving far more difficult to pinpoint the exact fault area than anticipated, and hoped to issue a revised timeline for the repair next week.

''The current available data does not provide sufficient information to enable the cable to be cut in the next few days as hoped,'' the statement said. 

Basslink said its crew involved in the repair operation continued to work ''around the clock'' to rectify the issue.

BASSLINK will not be repaired by the target date of March 19, and a new tentative completion date is yet to be set. 

Premier Will Hodgman told ABC Radio Basslink informed him on Friday morning it had experienced delays in its attempts to repair a fault in the underwater Basslink cable. 

"I can confirm that we've received advice... that suggests that a further delay in the repair of the cable is likely," he said.

"This is another disappointment, it's certainly not the news we want."

Tasmania's energy storage levels are currently at 18.3 per cent.

They were predicted to bottom out at 14 per cent assuming Basslink met its target repair date and the state received average rainfall. 

The Premier and Energy Minister Matthew Groom will hold a press conference at 11am on Friday to discuss the government's response to the delay.
