TasTAFE will be extending its Certificate II Production Horticulture course to the Deloraine Trade Training Centre after Easter and is seeking interested people.
The course is in its first year at Hobart but has been running for two years at Huonville.
Teacher John Jeffs said it had a great mixture of classroom theory and hands-on practical elements.
"It [the course] focuses on food production and is designed for people who are looking at getting jobs in the industry," Mr Jeffs said.
The course is available to anyone who is interested in learning more about horticulture food production.
Mr Jeffs said the course also had a heavy emphasis on work placement that will see students work in their intended industry for course points.
He said the benefits of work placement was twofold.
"It's great for the students to learn the technical aspect from those making money in the industry but what's really important is the head space that these growers are in," he said.
Certificate II Production Horticulture will teach students about propagation, soils, weeds and insects among other related aspects.
Mr Jeffs said the course had been designed to assist graduates to get access to food production and harvesting jobs without having to necessarily start at the bottom rung of the industry ladder.
"What we're finding at Huonville is that because students are skilled up, when it comes to apple and cherry harvest season they [the graduates] don't start at that basic level - they start working at a supervisory level," he said.
"The feedback we've gotten from the industry is that they don't want pickers or packers - they want people at that supervisory level and upwards."
Certificate II Production Horticulture will be starting at the Deloraine Trade Training Centre after Easter. For more information or to register your interest contact John Jeffs on 6165 6558 or the TasTAFE Service Centre on 1300 655 307.
