Many of Tasmania's forestry roads have fallen into disrepair since state-owned Forestry Tasmania struck financial strife, and their maintenance has been neglected.

The Local Government Association of Tasmania, in its 2016-2017 state Budget submission, drafted last month, said a necessary future funding and maintenance plan for such roads was virtually non-existent.

"It must be acknowledged that there is still no long-term solution or indication of how these roads should or will be maintained," LGAT noted.

"An ongoing issue of concern for local government in recent times has been the ambiguity surrounding the future management and funding of former Forestry Tasmania roads transferred to the Department of Primary Industry, Parks, Water and Environment.

"On behalf of its members the LGAT has continually sought greater clarity from the State Government regarding current and future funding arrangements for these roads, as a significant proportion act as major tourist routes and access points to iconic destinations."

The concern about the condition of the ex-forestry roads coincides with record numbers of inbound tourists to Tasmania, with many looking to use the road network to access outer-lying attractions and recreation sites.

Council mayors began to get more vocal with their concerns about the crumbling network early last year when it seemed nothing was getting done to fix the roads.

To make matters more complicated some of the degraded roads are managed by a combination of government tiers, agencies and FT.

Roads in the spotlight included the former Gunns Ltd-owned Wielangta Rd on the state's East Coast, a popular tourist route with several attractions; the roads to Lune River, Hastings Caves and Cockle Creek in the state's deep south; roads at the Blue Tier; some on Bruny Island; others near Leven Canyon and feeder roads in the Tarkine, although the Tarkine Drive is now the premier route for tourists.

In fact as early as December 2011 Forestry Tasmania was conceding "we just don't have the funds" to promptly fix a "disaster" road near Penguin.

Locals had warned that Hales Rd, about 10 kilometres from the town's centre, had become a major safety hazard.

In response to more recent community concerns the government announced $8 million would be available to the Parks and Wildlife Service for high priority infrastructure including roads previously the responsibility of FT but since transferred to the department.

Also, an audit is being conducted this year into the state's road network so that repair and maintenance can be prioritised.
