Geoffrey Charles Hunt lived at New Norfolk in 1969 but told Coroner Simon Cooper he "didn't really know" Ms Butterworth's fiancé John Fitzgerald.
The inquest on Monday morning has heard Hunt lived 50 metres away from Mr Fitzgerald.
Ms Butterworth, 20, vanished from a Claremont bus stop 46 years ago when she was on her way to visit Mr Fitzgerald at New Norfolk.
Mr Hunt is a convicted murderer, and other witnesses have placed him near Ms Butterworth on the night she vanished.
The inquest has previously heard that Mr Hunt would watch Ms Butterworth sunbaking at Mr Fitzgerald's house.
Mr Hunt told Mr Cooper it was "totally impossible" to see into the Fitzgerald's yard.
The inquest also heard Mr Hunt drove an FB Holden in 1969.
One similar has been placed near the bus stop where Ms Butterworth disappeared.
In a police interview last year, Mr Hunt said he had never laid eyes on Ms Butterworth.
The inquest continues.
