As Emma Parkinson emerged from the anaesthetic after surgery on her terrorist-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday afternoon, she was greeted by an Australian accent.
It was Australia's ambassador to France, Stephen Brady - who sped to her hospital bedside when he heard she was out of the operating theatre. He came with a mixture of good and terrible news.
The good news: Emma's mother was on the line from Tasmania, anxious to make contact with her daughter for the first time since the attack at the Bataclan concert hall.
The bad news was the full extent of the terrorist attack that the 19 year-old had been caught up in. Until that moment, more than 12 hours later, she hadn't known of its full, horrifying extent.
Ms Parkinson was shot during Friday night's terrorist attack on the Bataclan theatre, where she had been watching a band with friends.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, and mid-morning Saturday was prepped for surgery and put under anaesthetic.
The bullet had passed through her, so the surgery was mainly about cleaning the wound, explained Mr Brady, who was authorised by the Parkinson family to speak to Fairfax about their daughter.
Ms Parkinson had been in the concert hall when the attackers entered and began shooting, Mr Brady said.
"When the terrorist burst in her instinct was (that) she dropped to the floor and she kept very still," he said.
"Then she saw a barrier (inside the theatre) and she knew she had to get across it to run for freedom. As she crossed the barrier she then received a bullet…. (she was) shot in the hip."
Mr Brady said he had promised Emma's mother that he would make it his priority to be at her daughter's side the moment she came out from under the anaesthetic.
"She told me Emma's phone wasn't near her or had run out of charge," he said.
At around 2pm he got the all-clear from doctors and went to the hospital.
After introducing himself, he told her about what had happened over the past 24 hours.
"I gave her the context, I don't think she had quite heard how widespread the carnage was so I gave her the basics without wanting to scare her," Mr Brady said.
"Then I said 'enough of me, I promised your mum I would get her'.
"I got Mrs Parkinson (on the phone), put her on. The tears flowed and I thought it best that I leave the room. They had a really nice (talk), they've obviously got a really loving relationship."
But it wasn't the last unexpected conversation that Ms Parkinson was to have on Saturday afternoon.
Next up was foreign minister Julie Bishop who, Mr Brady said got Parkinson laughing and "made her feel good… it was much more than a 'take care of yourself', it was a very personal conversation".
And then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called from Turkey, where he had just emerged from a meeting with President Erdogan ahead of the G20 summit.
"(Parkinson) was very funny, she said 'do I call you Mr Prime Minister or The Prime Minister?' She was a class act and she gave an account to both the prime minister and the foreign minister of how her injuries had been sustained, without any self-pity."
Mr Brady said he was proud that Australia had shown its concern in this way – and it had a practical effect, distracting her from her traumatic experience, and showing her that she had the support of her family and her country.
The teenager's mother is en route to Paris and is expected to arrive on Monday morning, local time.
Ms Parkinson had been in Paris for about a week before the attack – she had been an exchange student at a high school near the Belgian border when she was 16, had then worked as an au pair in Germany, then decided she wanted to come back to France.
She is expected to be well enough to leave hospital "relatively soon", Mr Brady said.
