It is a war that should unite Christians and Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus. It should unite believers and non-believers, rich nations and poor.
They share a common cause. The freedom to believe and the freedom not to. Freedom of choice, and the common objective to cherish and protect that freedom.
The G20 Summit in Turkey ought to dump the initial agenda and agree on principles for defeating extremism.
This is our world, whether we are First World or Second or Third World. It is our planet. It is not for some crazy, deranged extremist to hijack and subjugate, in the pursuit of warped totalitarianism.
It is not a war for the West to face alone. Russia suffered the loss of one of its passenger aircraft, to the likely destruction of a bomb. These people will target Russia, China, Iran or the United States. They will seek any means to plunge the world into a permanent state of fear and oppression.
They are not interested in those who say: if we leave them alone, they will leave us alone. They're going to keep coming after nations until people are cowed in fear. All they have to do is take over rich oil fields in the Middle East and they could then challenge the super powers like the US, Russia or China. Imagine a backpack nuclear weapon in the heart of New York, Moscow or Beijing.
The super powers should put differences aside and end this madness. How long can they simply stand by and watch millions of Syrians and Iraqis being displaced from their homeland by thugs who simply want power under the guise of religious hegemony? The tide of human suffering we've seen across Europe is just the start. It must end now.
