The stadium was originally expected to be in use late this year but will now likely open in late January or early February.
Break O' Day Mayor Mick Tucker said while the stadium was all but finished, it would be more beneficial long-term to hold off the opening until the venue was fully functional.
"One thing we don't want to do is open it before it's completely ready," he said.
"You could nearly actually go and use it now if you had to in some limited capacity but it's finishing off all the toilets and all the office and all the other things that need to be completed as well."
Cr Tucker said sports groups were not the only ones keenly anticipating the opening, with the multi-purpose venue also touted as a potential space for concerts and performances.
"We have an awful lot of interest being shown by an awful lot of people.
"It's going to be part of an absolutely incredible outcome for our whole community of Break O' Day when you have the ability not only to hold sporting events but you can hold other functions and concerts and all of these sorts of things that benefit the community." The stadium is also expected to provide a welcome influx of intrastate visitors to Break O'Day communities, which will be music to the ears of business owners in the area.
"While [the stadium] might be in St Helens people will still travel through the Fingal Valley or through from Scottsdale down to access it, which means people will stop and have a counter meal or a bite to eat, fill up with fuel or grab a cup of coffee."
