Chris Oldfield will begin his new role in December.
He has been with Tasmanian Irrigation since April 2010, and was formerly the chief executive officer of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association.
Tasmanian Irrigation chairman John Lord paid tribute to Mr Oldfield, and said his appointment to represent Australia's consular and trade interests in the US was a tribute to his professional achievements.
“We are sorry to lose Chris, he has been the tireless leader of a team that has 10 schemes to its credit and another five literally in the pipeline,” Mr Lord said.
“At the same time, we recognise that to serve Australia in a senior consular and trade role overseas is an opportunity that few would refuse. We wish him and his wife, Penny, every success in this exciting chapter of their lives.”
The company's general manager Luke Curtain will step in as acting chief executive until a full-time replacement is found.
Primary Industries and Water Minister Jeremy Rockliff also thanked Mr Oldfield for his dedication to Tasmania's agricultural sector.
