Burke backflip

September 17 2012 - 2:22pm

REGARDLESS of your view of the super trawler, you'd have to be gobsmacked by the political backflip of the Environment Minister Tony Burke.  The concern is not the decision either way, but the flip flop political decision process after seven years of negotiation. Recently Mr Burke said he was comfortable with the science, but now needs another two years. This echoes minister Joe Ludwig's decision to ban live cattle exports to Indonesia following a damaging ABC documentary. This sudden, politically- motivated decision caused millions of dollars of loss to the economy. However, exports were subsequently reinstated with relatively minor changes. Similarly, this latest decision appears to have been made without a moment's thought to the economic outcomes and the potential job losses in Tasmania. Maybe both ministers could close their departments, follow the public debate and base their decisions on which side appears to be leading at any given time.
