Mr Hodgman and ministers will meet with the region’s council and business leaders, while enjoying everything from stuffed mushrooms to chocolate brownies prepared by aspiring hospitality sector workers.

Assistant principal Lynette Burt said the hospitality and cafe program for year 9 and 10 students differed from the conventional home economics classes, whereby they learn the skills and knowledge of the industry.

‘‘Every Thursday and Friday they cater for different lunches for the school community ... along with coffee, so it’s a little bit of an enterprise where they do shifts, organise the roster, budgeting and make sure their incoming costs are parallel with the outgoing costs,’’ Mrs Burt said.

‘‘The programs they do here align with the Certificate 1 and Certificate 2 in hospitality.’’

She said many students applied their skills by helping to cater for community events including the recent RSL Centenary breakfast and lunch and George Town Hub official opening.

Year 9 students Michegan Schenk and Hannah Barwick, both 14, said the classes were great for learning life skills that would one day provide them with a career path.

Bass Liberal MHA Sarah Courtney said the cabinet meeting would look to address the challenges Northern Tasmania had faced in the past few years.

‘‘It is an opportunity to be able to listen ... for ministers to hear feedback from the community about what are the challenges and what are the opportunities in the George Town region,’’ she said.
