Held in the village of Ross on Father’s Day, the event is promoting physical activity for all ages, abilities and disabilities, with a variety of race distances on offer.
The full marathon (42kilometres) for individuals and teams will start at 8am, followed by a half-marathon (21.1km) at 9.30am, a 10km walk-run from 10am and a children’s challenge (1.5km) for kids under 12 from noon.
‘‘The day offers a great opportunity for Tasmanians to visit Ross and enjoy being healthy and active in a relaxed and scenic environment,’’ race director Casey Mainsbridge said.
‘‘In the last two years, the Ross Marathon has experienced record numbers, attracting close to 900 participants across all the events, and it would be great to see that number again,’’ he said.
Mainsbridge said previous full marathon winners John Claridge and Aub Henricks would not be taking part this year, leaving the title race wide open for a new champion.
‘‘Usually, we get about 10per cent of our entries from interstate and, occasionally, internationally,’’ he said.
Launceston runners Meg Culhane and Mel Ferrier are previous participants who are again involved in this year’s event.
Culhane is helping out with the organisation on the committee. Her son Harry, 3, will be taking part in the children’s event.
Ferrier is competing in the half-marathon.
‘‘I’m excited about taking part in the half-marathon for the second year in a row and I’m using it as preparation to run the New York Marathon in November, which is very scary,’’ Ferrier said.
‘‘It’s always been on my bucket list and I am running it with a girlfriend who is coming up from Hobart to run the Ross half with me and will be trying to raise money in New York for Make a Wish Foundation,’’ she said.
Online entries for the Ross Marathon close on Monday, August 31, but entries can be made on race day.
