Work on the community-owned Deviot hall will include a registered kitchen, storage room and inside toilets and is expected to be completed by October.
With outside toilets, no storage areas and a kitchen last renovated in the 1930s, the hall was in much need of a makeover.
Deviot Community Association secretary Greg Ellick said that it was exciting to finally see the project taking shape.
"The community have done quite a few improvements to the hall over the years, including a new tennis court about five years ago," Mr Ellick said.
"The extension was costed at around $190,000 at the time and like all buildings, it's blown out since then.
"We had hoped to start in early January but there were issues with the septic system because there's a landslip area below the hall."
Mr Ellick said that the hall had always been well used by the community, despite its downfalls.
He said that in the future, he would like to see the hall used for more programs in the area, including for wine released on the Tamar Valley Wine Route.
"It's well used now anyway, it's the the hub of our little community," Mr Ellick said.
Funding for the project came from the Tasmanian Community Fund. $75,000, the West Tamar Council, $50,000, and the W.D. Booth Charitable Trust, $20,000.
The community hall was built in 1921 by orchardists in the area and was donated to the community in 1991.
