The Tornadoes will be chasing their seventh road win of the year and the equation for coach Reece Potter and his team is simple – beat Nunawading and book a spot in the finals for the first time in five seasons for the club.
But the trip to Nunawading’s home court, nicknamed the ‘‘Graveyard’’ will present a challenge for the club in their first meeting this season.
The Torns are coming off successive losses to Dandenong (away) and Bendigo (home) before the bye last week.
‘‘We’ve been working hard on court. With the bye we’ve been able to go a bit harder at practice and lift the intensity,’’ Potter said.
‘‘Having Emilee Harmon back in helps us structurally and gives us a greater inside presence and balance in our rotation.
‘‘We definitely do need a win but I think we are preparing well to do that.’’
Nunawading are sitting third in the Eastern conference with a 9-9 win-loss record but are loaded with WNBL level talent.
‘‘Inside, ex-Sydney Flame and now Melbourne Boomer Kate Oliver will provide a challenge for our bigs as she has the ability to step out to the perimeter,’’ Potter said.
‘‘She will be supported inside by WNBL level players Hayley Munro, Lucy Dawson and Georgia Pineau.
‘‘On the perimeter point guard Nicole Romeo is an experienced campaigner who recently came back from playing in the Euro-league, swingman Hayley Moffat will provide great defensive intensity and veteran scorer Carly Wilson will add some great perimeter shooting.
Potter said he believed the Tornadoes could match-up well with Nunawading and provide them with some challenges both on offence and defence.
‘‘I think we will be benefited by having the rest last week.
‘‘We will be better for having that extra big back in and will help us run our offensive stuff a bit smoother and get it through hands and be a little bit more effective because our shooting percentage has been really low over the last few games – part of that is fatigue and part of it is execution.
‘‘And we need to make sure we bring our defensive intensity because that has been our trademark for the whole year and we need to get back to that which wasn’t there against Dandenong consistently.
‘‘If we can get a win this will be a fantastic result and certainly what we will be working towards.’’
