First year apprentice hairdressing students competed against each other to take home the Natalia Pearn Perpetual Trophy.

Hair and beauty teacher Leanne Colgrave said the 2-hour styling session also included 11 assessments, which taught students a range of skills including moulding, wet setting and creating styles with thermal equipment, blow dryers and rollers.

Mrs Colgrave said Natalia Pearn had been a student at the TasTAFE Alanvale campus, and that winning the trophy was important to the students.

‘‘Natalia participated in competitions similar to this,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s great that the students all know her story, they know her journey of being a hairdresser, how she started out, and this perpetual trophy goes to the winner and they get to keep it in their salon for six months.

‘‘It’s an inspiration of how Natalia’s journey went.’’

Student Darion O’Halloran said she had created a smooth wave at the top of her model’s hair, which flowed into a triangle shaped bob further down.

‘‘It would be awesome (to win the trophy), just to let me know that I’m going along well,’’ she said.
