And just 6.3 per cent of Bass electors, compared with 3.7per cent of those in Lyons, consider marriage equality the most important issue facing them.
The ReachTEL poll, commissioned by The Examiner, asked almost 600 voters in both Bass and Lyons if they supported or opposed same-sex marriage.
In Bass, 47.9 per cent of electors said they supported marriage equality.
The level of support was by far the strongest among the youngest people polled, with 69.5 per cent of those aged between 18 and 34 in favour of same-sex marriage.
Opposition was most obvious among those aged over 65, with 59.2 per cent against marriage equality.
There was little difference in support levels between men and women.
Just 30 per cent of Bass Liberal supporters were in favour of same-sex marriage, while almost 60 per cent of Labor-leaning electors backed marriage equality.
Same-sex marriage was by far the most popular among Greens supporters, with more than three-quarters of those polled in favour of the proposal.
Overall support for same-sex marriage was lower in Lyons, with just more than 45 per cent in favour.
Lyons women far outweighed men in their support for marriage equality, with 56.5 per cent approval compared with 34.2 per cent.
Again, opposition to same-sex marriage was by far the strongest among those aged over 65.
And support was clearest among voters aged between 18 and 34, albeit well below the levels seen in Bass.
Support levels were fairly consistent with Bass when measured along party lines, with just a quarter of Lyons Liberal supporters backing same-sex marriage.
Almost 60 per cent of Labor electors, and 80 per cent of Greens supported marriage equality.
