FORMER North Launceston football coach Tony Haenen has died in Melbourne at the age of 69.

Haenen came to North Launceston in 1972 after playing 93 games with South Melbourne.
He spent three seasons as captain-coach of North Launceston, taking the team to the 1973 grand final, which Scottsdale won by 11 points.
During his time in Tasmania, Haenen regularly represented the NTFA at centre half-back and in 1972 played for the state in the national carnival in Perth.
At the end of 1974, Haenen returned to Victoria where he coached Port Melbourne in the VFA, taking the team to the 1976 VFA premiership.
His son Toby was born in Launceston and later went on to be a talented swimmer, winning a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996.
