A week after staging the primary school titles, the motor racing venue again played host to the state’s best junior runners in six age groups across distances from three to six kilometres.
The annual event is proving to be increasingly popular with 54 schools represented and Athletics Tasmania executive officer Gabby Steele delighted with the turnout.
‘‘This is an exciting opportunity for all secondary school students to embrace physical activity along with their peers and have fun doing so,’’ she said.
‘‘The challenging course is a great way for students to participate in a fun run type atmosphere yet in a safe and controlled environment.’’
Riverside’s Sam Clifford continued his success from primary school championships by claiming the under-14 men’s event while James Curran, of Launceston Church Grammar, claimed the under-15 event and Getasew Ferguson, of St Patrick’s College, won the under 17s.
The under-20 titles were taken out by state athletic champions Bini Hagos, of Guilford Young, and Fahan’s Tessa Johns.
A Tasmanian team will be selected in the 14, 16, 18 and 20 age groups to compete in Melbourne in August as a part of the Australian cross-country championships.
Full results are available on the Athletics Tasmania website.
