Hosted at the Bayles' Chanak property at Cressy, this year's championships will act as a precursor to the national titles, to be held at the same venue on June 26 and 27.

National board member Peter Gladwell has been involved with the Tasmanian Ploughing Association for more than four decades and said he expected close competition.

"This year it's all pretty even, there's no competitors with advantage over the others," Mr Gladwell said.

"It's been quite some time since we've had a Tasmanian conventional ploughman represent Australia, reversible-wise we've been up there."

He said two of the state's competitors had just travelled to New Zealand and could be hopefuls for the Australian squad.

"They've had five matches over there in the last fortnight," Mr Gladwell said.

"They should come back with a fair bit of practice and knowledge, hopefully they'll do well."

Winners from the national title will enter the world team, to compete in Denmark later this year.

Mr Gladwell has competed in nine world events himself and attended a further five in various countries.

"There's 32 countries competing again this year in October," he said.

"They're predominantly European, but you've also got Kenya, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America."

Travel to the events is not just an excuse to catch up with good friends, Mr Gladwell said it was also an opportunity to spy the latest in agricultural development.

"All of our agricultural equipment these days comes either from Europe or America," he said.

"Going to ploughing matches, you see bits and pieces over there, much of it before it's released in Australia."
