The quake struck near Waterloo, about 65 kilometres south-west of Hobart, at 9.49am on Wednesday morning.
There was no damaged caused to infrastructure.
It was the 463rd earthquake to hit Tasmania in the last 30 years.
Geoscience Australia seismologist Dan Connolly said the event was not unusual.
``Tasmania gets a lot of earthquakes,'' he said.
``The reason why is because it's part of an area that feels the movement of tectonic plates more than other areas. Places like Tasmania, Gippsland in Victoria and Flinders in South Australia tend to feel it more.''
Mr Connolly said the tremor was picked up by a Geoscience Australia analyst.
He said the western half of Tasmania tends to experience more quakes than the eastern half.
``No one from the public called in about the earthquake.''
Geoscience Australia has encouraged residents to contact them if they feel any tremors.
