The 30-year-old, former Australian amateur team captain and Commonwealth and Olympic Games representative defeated the 31-year-old Queenslander in a split points decision from the three judges who scored the 10-round fight in Jackson’s favour 96-93, 96-93, 94-95.
It was Jackson’s eighth-straight professional victory.
‘‘I got the win on points - I dropped him in the second round and then won pretty much all of the other rounds except the last two when he came back a bit stronger,’’ Jackson said.
‘‘I hurt him badly in the second round so I don’t know how he managed to get back up and continue to fight but it shows how tough he was, so I’m happy to win an Australian title.’’
Jackson said it was a tough fight that left him with a marked face, busted eardrum and sore body the day after the bout.
As for his future plans, a hometown defence of his featherweight title could be on the cards for his next fight.
‘‘I will speak to my team next week and hopefully try to set up a title defence against whoever would like to chase my belt down in Hobart later this year,’’ he said.
‘‘I always had two main goals as a boxer - as an amateur to represent Australia at an Olympic Games and as a professional to win a national title.
‘‘So it’s another goal checked off and I just have to keep plugging away and sort out my next goals and go from there.’’
