A motion to support marriage equality has been voted down by the Launceston City Council.
Alderman Emma Williams had put forward a motion for the council to support marriage equality by putting it in writing to federal politicians and parties.
The motion was voted down eight to three, with Alderman Danny Gibson abstaining from the vote.
Aldermen Williams, Andrea Dawkins, and Janie Finlay put their support behind the motion.
Most of the aldermen who voted against the motion said it was because there had not been enough consultation with the community about the issue.
